Coupling bounds for approximating birth-death processes by truncation.

Statistics & probability letters

Crawford FW, Stutz TC, Lange K.
PMID: 26622074
Stat Probab Lett. 2016 Feb 01;109:30-38. doi: 10.1016/j.spl.2015.10.013.

Birth-death processes are continuous-time Markov counting processes. Approximate moments can be computed by truncating the transition rate matrix. Using a coupling argument, we derive bounds for the total variation distance between the process and its finite approximation.

Dysfunctional Attitudes and Affective Responses to Daily Stressors: Separating Cognitive, Genetic, and Clinical Influences on Stress Reactivity.

Cognitive therapy and research

Conway CC, Slavich GM, Hammen C.
PMID: 27041782
Cognit Ther Res. 2015 Jun;39(3):366-377. doi: 10.1007/s10608-014-9657-1. Epub 2014 Dec 31.

Despite decades of research examining diathesis-stress models of emotional disorders, it remains unclear whether dysfunctional attitudes interact with stressful experiences to shape affect on a daily basis and, if so, how clinical and genetic factors influence these associations. To...

MM Algorithms for Some Discrete Multivariate Distributions.

Journal of computational and graphical statistics : a joint publication of American Statistical Association, Institute of Mathematical Statistics, Interface Foundation of North America

Zhou H, Lange K.
PMID: 20877446
J Comput Graph Stat. 2010 Sep 01;19(3):645-665. doi: 10.1198/jcgs.2010.09014.

The MM (minorization-maximization) principle is a versatile tool for constructing optimization algorithms. Every EM algorithm is an MM algorithm but not vice versa. This article derives MM algorithms for maximum likelihood estimation with discrete multivariate distributions such as the...

Adamantane-1-thio-amide.

Acta crystallographica. Section E, Structure reports online

Zahid M, Khawar Rauf M, Bolte M, Hameed S.
PMID: 21583581
Acta Crystallogr Sect E Struct Rep Online. 2009 Jul 18;65:o1891. doi: 10.1107/S1600536809027470.

The title compound, C(11)H(17)NS, is an important inter-mediate for the synthesis of biologically active adamantlythia-zolo-oxadiazo-les. The adamantyl residue is disordered about a twofold rotation axis over two sites with site-occupation factors of 0.817 (3) and 0.183 (3). The crystal...

Attempted DNA extraction from a Rancho La Brea Columbian mammoth (Mammuthus columbi): prospects for ancient DNA from asphalt deposits.

Ecology and evolution

Gold DA, Robinson J, Farrell AB, Harris JM, Thalmann O, Jacobs DK.
PMID: 24634719
Ecol Evol. 2014 Feb;4(4):329-36. doi: 10.1002/ece3.928. Epub 2014 Jan 11.

Fossil-bearing asphalt deposits are an understudied and potentially significant source of ancient DNA. Previous attempts to extract DNA from skeletons preserved at the Rancho La Brea tar pits in Los Angeles, California, have proven unsuccessful, but it is unclear...

Daily stress reactivity and serotonin transporter gene (5-HTTLPR) variation: internalizing responses to everyday stress as a possible transdiagnostic phenotype.

Biology of mood & anxiety disorders

Conway CC, Slavich GM, Hammen C.
PMID: 24461074
Biol Mood Anxiety Disord. 2014 Jan 24;4(1):2. doi: 10.1186/2045-5380-4-2.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies examining the interaction between the 5-HTTLPR locus in the serotonin transporter gene and life stress in predicting depression have yielded equivocal results, leading some researchers to question whether 5-HTTLPR variation indeed regulates depressive responses to stress....

Rating Movies and Rating the Raters Who Rate Them.

The American statistician

Zhou H, Lange K.
PMID: 20802818
Am Stat. 2009 Nov 01;63(4):297-307. doi: 10.1198/tast.2009.08278.

The movie distribution company Netflix has generated considerable buzz in the statistics community by offering a million dollar prize for improvements to its movie rating system. Among the statisticians and computer scientists who have disclosed their techniques, the emphasis...

Maximal information component analysis: a novel non-linear network analysis method.

Frontiers in genetics

Rau CD, Wisniewski N, Orozco LD, Bennett B, Weiss J, Lusis AJ.
PMID: 23487572
Front Genet. 2013 Mar 12;4:28. doi: 10.3389/fgene.2013.00028. eCollection 2013.

BACKGROUND: Network construction and analysis algorithms provide scientists with the ability to sift through high-throughput biological outputs, such as transcription microarrays, for small groups of genes (modules) that are relevant for further research. Most of these algorithms ignore the...

Lipin-1 and lipin-3 together determine adiposity in vivo.

Molecular metabolism

PMID: 24634820
Mol Metab. 2013 Nov 28;3(2):145-54. doi: 10.1016/j.molmet.2013.11.008. eCollection 2014 Apr.

The lipin protein family of phosphatidate phosphatases has an established role in triacylglycerol synthesis and storage. Physiological roles for lipin-1 and lipin-2 have been identified, but the role of lipin-3 has remained mysterious. Using lipin single- and double-knockout models...

MM Algorithms For Variance Components Models.

Journal of computational and graphical statistics : a joint publication of American Statistical Association, Institute of Mathematical Statistics, Interface Foundation of North America

Variance components estimation and mixed model analysis are central themes in statistics with applications in numerous scientific disciplines. Despite the best efforts of generations of statisticians and numerical analysts, maximum likelihood estimation and restricted maximum likelihood estimation of variance...

A fast Data-Driven method for genotype imputation, phasing, and local ancestry inference: MendelImpute.jl.

Bioinformatics (Oxford, England)

Chu BB, Sobel EM, Wasiolek R, Ko S, Sinsheimer JS, Zhou H, Lange K.
PMID: 34289008
Bioinformatics. 2021 Jul 21; doi: 10.1093/bioinformatics/btab489. Epub 2021 Jul 21.

MOTIVATION: Current methods for genotype imputation and phasing exploit the volume of data in haplotype reference panels and rely on hidden Markov models. Existing programs all have essentially the same imputation accuracy, are computationally intensive, and generally require pre-phasing...
