Abstract

In 1735 the physician Samuel Theodor Quellmalz invented a machine which imitated the movements of a horse and was designed for medical treatment as well as general fitness. The invention paradigmaticlly characterizes the dominant medical discourse of that time and demonstrates a new confidence in technical innovations
