Abstract

The nitrite is used to diazotize o-nitroaniline and the o-nitrophenyldiazonium chloride formed is coupled with N-(1-naphthyl)ethylenediamine dihydrochloride. The red-violet dye (absorption maxima at 545 nm) is stable and extractable into isoamyl alcohol. Beer's law is obeyed in the range 0.1-0.6 ppm nitrite in the original sample if the aqueous system is measured, and 0.025-0.15 ppm in the sample if extraction is used. The molar absorptivity is 6.04 x 10(4)l.mole(-1).cm(-1).
