Abstract

Good prenatal care is a question of priorities - the patient's and the doctor's. The patient must be educated to realize that without prenatal care she is back at a 19th century standard, which she would not accept in other areas of her life. The doctor must realize the added responsibility of late prenatal care, without shrugging off the patient because she has disrupted his routine. Also, the profession must realize its responsibility in seeing that good prenatal care is provided, both by ensuring programs of continuing medical education, and by seeing that fee schedules recognize the importance of prevention.
