Abstract

Oxygen therapy is being prescribed with increasing frequency for hypoxemic chronic respiratory failure. The author reviews the rationale for prescribing oxygen, its indications, methods of delivery, and cost. Oxygen is the only form of therapy shown to prolong survival in patients with obstructive lung disease. Its prescription requires careful physiologic and clinical assessment, as it will frequently result in lifelong administration.
