Abstract

This paper seeks to unpack the main reasons as to why there is a dramatic gender imbalance as females are underrepresented in the subject of computer science. Research was undertaken as a British University and focused upon the Faculty of Technology and Environment. The author intended to add to a broad range of literature surrounding the subject matter. The content emphasizes the daunting figures regarding the underrepresentation of females in computing and uncovers the significance of promoting successful female role models in the field. It also highlights the importance of banishing the negative stereotypical images related to the discipline and discusses the barriers females face entering the field as well as the benefits females will encounter if they raise to the challenge of pursuing a career in technology. The results from the primary research back the figures up as they show the female participants believe their schools are dominated by the male species, and they agree a stereotype does exist in the field, however they don't let this put them off progressing. To conclude the dissertation proposes a set of recommendations which universities could adapt to help them with the recruitment and retention of female students. © 2015 IEEE.
