Abstract

Developed and refined 2 nursing self-efficacy scales, the Nursing Academic Self-Efficacy Scale and the Nursing Clinical Self- Efficacy Scale, for use in identifying problems in the progress of undergraduate nurses. 549 nursing students (aged (17–45 yrs) participated in 3 phases of development, which included refinement of scale structure and assessment of reliability. Emergent factors within each scale contained items representing important aspects of nursing education. Both measures showed good internal consistency, test–retest reliability, and construct validity. Sensitivity to content and focus of tuition at time of completion was shown with some changes in factor structure over samples of 1st yr students. Academic self-efficacy was predictive of course withdrawal. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2012 APA, all rights reserved)
