A growing body of research suggests that the beliefs, interests, expectations and other attitudes acquired early in life play a critical role in shaping individuals' career trajectories. Yet the causal pathways connecting early-acquired attitudes and future outcomes are not well understood. In this study, the authors argue that a plausible way to understand this relationship is by postulating a direct effect of early-acquired attitudes on future outcomes that is not mediated by more recent values of these attitudes.
