Purpose: To select quality coplanar solutions to the beam orientation optimization (BOO) problem in intensity‐modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) treatment planning, and to demonstrate that high‐quality treatment plans can be obtained using fewer beams than typically used in equi‐spaced plans.
