Since anions play a significant role in the environment and life, molecular recognition of anions with synthetic receptors is an area of intensive current research at the interface of chemistry and biology. In particular, molecules with urea/thiourea functional groups are useful to bind anions by directional hydrogen-bonding interactions under neutral conditions.
