In this study, we explored data drawn from case studies of five universities across the United States. The sample included focus groups with seventy students and interviews with sixteen faculty and administrators involved in undergraduate research programs. Our findings contribute to a better understanding of how undergraduate research programs help students overcome barriers to persistence in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields.
