In this letter, we propose a new energy-efficient metric for relay node selection in multi-hop random wireless sensor networks (WSN) where the sensor nodes are distributed randomly and the node circuit energy consumption is also taken into consideration. During the routing, the relay node is selected in a forwarding area, which is defined by two parameters: a forwarding area radius and forwarding area angle.
