A review of the development and the usages of traditional non-internal state variable (ISV) models and ISV theory for modeling behaviors of composite materials are presented in this paper. The history of earliest composites models for predictions of material stiffness, failure, viscoelasticity and plasticity is discussed first. Then following the ISV theory, a fundamental thermodynamic framework that governs the dissipative effects caused by the inelastic phenomena is introduced.
