Our understanding of the earliest evolution of jawed vertebrates depends on a credible phylogenetic assessment of the jawed stem gnathostomes collectively known as 'placoderms'. However, their relationships, and even whether 'placoderms' represent a single radiation or a paraphyletic array, remain contentious.
