Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is caused by the lack of dystrophin, a protein that connects the extracellular matrix to the cytoskeleton in muscle fibres. DMD boys develop progressive muscle wasting, leading to cardiac and respiratory failure and premature death.
