In chapter 4, Antonio L. Ellis, Christopher N. Smith, and Janatus A. Barnett reflect on their experiences as graduate students at HBCUs. One of the most compelling narratives of this chapter is Ellis's story of being encouraged by professors not to attend an HBCU for graduate school. Ellis notes that his professors suggested that people who receive graduate degrees from HBCUs are less likely to be employed compared to persons who studied at predominantly White institutions (PWIs).
