Nurse educators should help students to alter their perceptions of the clinical field and evaluate situations, so that they are able to engage in desired behaviors. Students who believe what happens to them is principally because of luck, fate, chance, or powerful others should be helped through the process of self-evaluation to change their locus orientation. Locus orientation is a relatively stable personality factor developed over time and acquired through a series of many social learning experiences. It deals with individuals interpretations of the causality of behavioral outcomes or reinforcements.
